Philly house and condo film

Residential Window Film in Philadelphia

House film in Philadelphia usually starts with one complaint: a front room anyone can see into, a bedroom that is unbearable by 4 p.m., or a sunny floor that keeps fading. We match the film to that problem.

What Philadelphia Homeowners Use Window Film For

Most residential calls we get fall into four groups. Rowhome owners want privacy on street-level windows without living behind closed blinds. People in new construction and top-floor condos want the heat and glare off big glass. Owners of older houses with good floors, antiques or art want UV protection. And a steady number want security film on basement, rear and alley-side windows after a break-in on the block.

Some homes need two or three of these at once. A corner rowhouse in Fairmount might need privacy film on the front, heat film on the west side wall and security film on the back kitchen door. We price each window by what it needs instead of putting one film on the whole house.

Window Film for Philly Rowhouses and Trinities

The rowhouse is the default Philadelphia home, and its windows are concentrated on two walls. That means the front and back elevations take all the sun and all the street exposure, and there is no side window to balance light. On a block running east to west, one side of the street gets direct southern sun on its front windows all day, while the other side gets it on the back.

Trinities and other narrow houses stack rooms vertically, so a single tall stair window or a third-floor bedroom window can heat the whole top of the house. Film on those few panes often does more than the same film spread over a larger, shadier house.

Residential Film for Twins, Stone Houses and New Builds

Victorian twins in West Philly, Germantown and parts of Mount Airy have more glass than rowhomes: bay windows, side windows and sometimes stained or leaded transoms. Those houses benefit from clear UV and heat film on the large panes and decorative film where a side window looks straight into the neighbor's house.

The Wissahickon stone houses of Chestnut Hill and the Northwest have thick walls and smaller openings, so heat is less of an issue. The common requests there are UV film for sunrooms and low-E film for drafty original sashes. New builds in Fishtown and Northern Liberties sit at the other end, with floor-to-ceiling glass, roof deck doors and very little shade.

Choosing Home Window Film for Philadelphia Weather

Because Philly has a real summer and a real winter, we steer most homeowners toward film that does not make winter worse. Very dark or heavily reflective film blocks useful winter sun on south windows. A spectrally selective or low-E film cuts summer heat and keeps more of the winter daylight and warmth.

North windows rarely need heat film at all. East windows matter for morning glare in bedrooms and kitchens. South and west windows are where most of the summer heat comes in, so we usually start there and leave the rest of the house alone unless privacy or security is the goal.

Residential Window Film FAQs for Philadelphia

Can I put window film on old wavy glass in a Philadelphia house?

Often yes, but very old or uneven glass makes a perfect finish harder and some panes may already be stressed. We inspect each pane and may suggest leaving fragile original glass untouched.

Will privacy film work at night?

Frosted and patterned films block views day and night. One-way mirror films only work when it is brighter outside than inside, so with lights on after dark people on the sidewalk can see in.

Is window film allowed in my condo building?

Many Center City and Rittenhouse condo associations have rules about how windows look from outside. Check your building rules, and we can provide specifications for the board.

How long does it take to tint a rowhome?

A typical rowhouse with front and back windows usually takes a few hours. Larger twins, stone houses or homes with many small divided panes take longer.
